Peer Recovery Advocate will provide direct services to community members struggling with substance use and behavioral health concerns. Incumbent will promote recovery and aid individuals with overcoming barriers and obstacles to recovery. Will serve as a personal guide, and mentor for people seeking recovery. Serve as a role models for recipients and educate recipients about self-help techniques and group process; teach them effective coping strategies, sometimes based on personal experience; assist in clarifying goals for rehabilitation and recovery; and help them develop support systems. Peer Recovery Advocates model competence and the possibility of recovery, and assist recipients in developing the perspectives and skills that facilitate recovery.

High school diploma or equivalency. Knowledge of the Recovery process and the ability to facilitate recovery using established standardized process. Knowledge and skill to teach and engage in basic problem solving strategies to support individual clients in self-directed recovery. Knowledge of the signs and symptoms of substance use disorder and mental illness and the ability to assist the client to address symptoms using strategies such as positive self-talk. Knowledge and skill sufficient to use community resources necessary for independent living and ability to teach those skills to other individuals. May accompany clients to community resources to assist them in accessing these resources. Knowledge of how to establish and sustain self-help (mutual-support) and educational groups by soliciting input from the consumers on their strengths and interests. A valid driver’s license and ability to operate a Nation vehicle is required as some driving and/or transportation may be required to take clients to medical appointments, job sites, social activities and other community resources. Will obtain certification as a Certified Recovery Peer Advocate within 12 months of employment.
